- Car overview

There are certain cars that just define an era, and the Evo VI is firmly one of them.

Before huge power figures, endless driving modes and cars becoming increasingly complicated, Mitsubishi gave us a relatively compact four door saloon with a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine, proper four wheel drive, a manual gearbox and some seriously clever chassis technology.

The Evo VI took everything Mitsubishi had learned through its rally programme and wrapped it up in something you could use every day. And more than 25 years later, they still feel incredibly special. They have the looks, the noise, the driving experience and, perhaps most importantly, the reputation. Park an Evo VI at Bicester, a Cars & Coffee morning or just outside the pub on a Sunday and people still stop to look at it.

THIS CAR

We are delighted to offer this 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI GSR, registration S617 FAJ, finished in the fantastic Icelle Blue. Showing approximately 107,000 miles, this is a really honest example that has thankfully remained largely as Mitsubishi intended it.

It hasn’t been transformed into a 600bhp project, covered in aftermarket bodywork or lost its original character. The main deviations from standard are a Sony double DIN head unit and an aftermarket induction kit. Otherwise, this is very much the sort of Evo we like to find.

UNDERNEATH

And this is an important one with any Evo of this age. The car underwent an underbody inspection last month, during which previous areas requiring attention were identified and the chassis legs were welded. The underside has subsequently been sealed and we have photographic records of the underbody available for prospective buyers.

We would much rather be open about work like this than pretend a 26 year old Japanese performance car has never required anything underneath.

WHY AN EVO VI?

Because some cars are more than their performance figures. The Evo VI came from one of the greatest periods of Japanese performance car development and remains one of the most instantly recognisable cars of its generation. The huge rear wing, swollen arches, aggressive front end, Recaros and unmistakable turbocharged 4G63 soundtrack are all part of the appeal.

But underneath the image is a genuinely brilliant driver’s car. The GSR brought together the 4G63 turbo engine, permanent four wheel drive, Active Yaw Control, Brembo brakes and a proper five speed manual gearbox in a package weighing around 1,360kg.

And as so many Evos were modified heavily, used hard or simply disappeared over the years, finding one that still feels recognisably like an Evo VI is becoming increasingly important to enthusiasts and collectors.

This isn’t a car you need to explain. Anyone who grew up with rallying, Gran Turismo, Max Power, Japanese performance magazines or the golden era of the Evo versus Impreza battle already knows exactly what it is.

A proper modern classic. A proper driver’s car. And still one of the coolest Japanese performance saloons ever built.
