Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda

Introduced to the world in 1963 at the Geneva Motor Show, the ‘W113’ generation SL made waves within the automotive world. As a direct successor to the previous generations 190SL - and the almost unobtainable 300SL, Mercedes launched the generation with a larger marketplace in mind, with the introduction of the 2.3, 2.5 and 2.8 engines, giving customers a broader range of options in both performance and practicality whilst being able to access a reliable and comfortable two seater sports car that had been designed to save weight, and handle well with its advanced suspension and short / wide wheelbase. 

Nicknamed the “Pagoda”  due to its concave hardtop, the W113 drew inspiration on design from previous models to include the iconic three point star set within the front grill - as present on the 300SL, but brought in radical changes in design. 

The inline six, 2.8 litre M130 engine put 170ps from new, giving ample performance for the time. 

The Pagoda in our opinion goes down in automotive history as one of the most important and iconic cars from its era, but we are not the only one to hold this opinion. This truly is a car for the stars with multiple celebrities having owned one at some point. These include Walt Disney, John Lennon, Sophia Loren, Stirling Moss and Kate Moss.
